President's Report

Brods completed their season with a highly creditable finish achieving 5th spot in a very competitive league . A position which would surely have been acceptable at the beginning of the campaign following promotion prior to Covid.

On Saturday they overcame a competitive Morpeth side who had travelled with a large band of supporters to their final league game in Yorkshire following the changes in the league system which will see clubs at this level travelling fewer miles in their respective league competitions.

Brods opted to play up the hill in the first half and with a strong wind behind them opened the game brightly with pace and good handling to go into an early lead with a well taken try by Adam Sutcliffe 5-0.

Morpeth responded well and took the game back to the Woodhead boys with a brief period of possession however the home defence was up to it and following a turnover ball Brods counter attacked and were unlucky not to add to their score when some excellent inter-passing went to ground. This followed a good break by Dom Georgiou and Phil Town and Brods maintained the pressure in the Morpeth 22. Following a strong driving run by Brods hooker Cole Wilson, who went close, Rob Jennings was in support and he crossed from close range for Brods second try, converted by Phil town the score-line was extended to 12-0.

Brods dominance continued and Morpeth could not cope with a driving maul set up at a lineout on their 10 metre line. The drive took Brods to the Morpeth try line and Ben Hoyle broke away to score a fine collective try. With an excellent conversion from wide on the left Brods had stretched their lead to 19-0.

Town was using the wind well to maintain Brods territorial pressure deep in the Morpeth half and Cameron Wroot was carrying strongly to give the visitors plenty of problems in defence. From a lineout close to the Morpeth line Brods once more drove over however the referee considered the ball to be held up.

Brods did score their fourth try when Rob Jennings picked up and made some hard yards, he released the ball for the Brods backline to move the ball through several pairs of hands and Phil Town finished in fine style between the posts .

With a score-line standing at 26-0 Brods appeared to be in absolute control at half time however from the restart the visitors clearly had other ideas. Their captain and number 8 finished some strong approach play and crossed the Brods line under the posts where the try was converted. This was due reward for some good play and Brods defence was stretched again and a second try quickly was quickly added as the visitors took the initiative with good running, and support play which the Brods defence were unable to contain 26-14.

Brods recovered well, tightening their defence and when Morpeth set up another attack Brods defensive line pressed and Phil Town was on hand to intercept a loose ball and race 50 metres avoiding the Morpeth defenders Town converted his try to extend the lead to 33-14 and Brods were back in control.

Cam Wroot came back on the field after a brief period on the bench and he scattered Morpeth defenders with his strong running down the centre of the field, Danny Chappell was in support and ran clear to score by the posts however ben Hoyle was unable to convert 38-14.

Brods were not finished and immediately from the restart jimmy Hodkinson finished a fine performance with another break from half way to score and towns conversion led to a final score line of 45-14

To complete another good season At Woodhead the Brods Beavers travelled to Cleckheaton where they completed a comprehensive victory over their hosts and claim their own league title as Champions of the Central Yorkshire Merit Table , presentation night on Friday for the seniors and a full day of fun at the junior presentation on Sunday.
