President's Report

Brods players and supporters returned home from Pocklington with mixed feelings following a game in which they fell below their usual high standards however showed courage and great character in recording 2 bonus points whilst finishing the game with just thirteen men on the pitch due to injuries

In misty conditions the home side kicked off and monopolised the early play although restricted to centre field .the home team opened the scoring after 7 minutes play with a well-constructed forward drive from a lineout about 15 metres out and with a good conversion from wide on the left they held a 7-0 lead . unforced errors by the Woodhead boys resulted in a lack of quality possession and Pocklington took advantage of the territory by setting up another driving maul which was stopped by the Brods however on this occasion the ball was moved swiftly infield and the Pocklington inside centre ran a good line to finish with a try between the posts which was again converted after just 12 minutes play. It took 20 minutes for The Woodhead boys to get into the home side’ s 22 and they put together some good phases as they fought to get back into the game. Cole Wilson and Elliot Craven were carrying well for the Brods as the visitors looked to play with more width to their game . Danny Chappell’s 50/22 kick put Brods in a good position as half time approached however a high tackle on Michael Briggs meant he had to leave the field just as Kyle Millward suffered a shoulder injury and also had to be substituted . Elliot Craven was also struggling with a shoulder injury however the pressure exerted by the visitors finally received some reward when Michael Tuke finished a fine piece of handling down the right wing . the conversion was missed from the touchline and the 14-5 score line was a fair reflection of the game at that stage however the injuries were a worry to the Brods coaching team .

Early in the second half and from a good position Brods drove strongly some 15 metres to the line and Elliot craven touched down at the back of the maul to give Brods further hope with a score line of 14-10. However the injury crisis was starting to bite as following the restart further injuries to Michael tuke , Rob Jennings and Bennie Pritchett meant that the visitors had used their three subs and were down to 13 men on the field of play A speculative kick down field by the home side could not be cleared and they followed up to use their numerical advantage wide on the left to touch down in the corner to extend the score to 19-10. Pocklington used that advantage again as they exerted more pressure in the Brods 22 . When they got their opportunity they again outstretched the visitors defence with a long pass to the left wing . Pock looked to secure their lead with a well taken penalty goal and with the score at 26-10 and the Brods struggling to compete with just 13 men it looked like the visitors were facing a heavy defeat however the Hipperholme boys dug deep and showed great character to stay in the game .

The visitors were still looking to carry the game to their hosts and were rewarded for their efforts when another lineout was well taken and driven over the line for Cameron Wroot to touch down and with Matty Hoyle converting from the touchline Brods were still in touch at 26-17. Against all the odds Brods were dominating the game now and with strong running from Alex Dawson and Michael Briggs scattering the Pocklington defenders in centre field Michael Briggs was in support to score a superb try between the posts. This was a bonus point try and with the conversion a losing bonus point was also earned for Woodhead boys.

Brods were still pressing as the final whistle blew and a strange mixture of frustration and satisfaction for a huge second half effort could not replace the feeling that this was a game they could have won.

Brods entertain Cleckheaton next Saturday at Woodhead ko 2.15pm
