Match Report

Bradford Salem 0-17 Old Brods
by Richard Turner

Brods travelled to Shay Lane looking to extend their winning sequence with resources stretched following the loss of young hooker to National League side Huddersfield during the week.

The ever reliable Ryan Harris stepped up from playing in the back row for the second team to enjoy an excellent game in his old position and was instrumental in a great team effort. Harris had an excellent game in a good all round performance where the Woodhead boys showed their organisation, patience and discipline and managed to Ni their hosts on their own ground.

During the early exchanges Salem pinned Brods in their own 22 but the defence held well and it was Chris Georgiou who cleared the lines to relieve the pressure with a well aimed line kick and the visitors took a toe hold in the opposition's half for the first time after 8 minutes play.

Brods control of the lineout was good and a good drive to the posts by Joe Kafatolu put Brods in a good position. Brods were rewarded with a penalty following an indiscretion in the ruck and Bennie Pritchett opted to go for a lineout in the corner as the option a to an easy three points. Brods were in control at the resulting lineout and put further pressure on their hosts resulting in Pritchett forcing his way over the line from short range.

The penalty count was heavily in Brods favour as they maintained their discipline to keep the pressure on the Salem side. Brods worked their way once more to the Salem line and after a solo effort from Jennings at a lineout Brods were in a good position 5 metres out and a scrum awarded in their favour. The scrum was solid and Jennings controlled the ball well at the base before picking up to make the 5 yards to the line and then twisting in the attempted tackle to touchdown and extend the lead to 10 points.

Salem came back strongly in the remaining 10 minutes of the first half however the Hipperholme boys stood their ground and the home side were unable to break the defensive line.

For 10 minutes after half time Brods maintained their control and camped in the Salem half. Winning the ball on the left the Brods forwards pounded the Salem line and with the referee playing advantage following a misdemeanour under the posts the ball was swiftly moved right where Louis Butler put young wingman Alex Hanson making his debut in at the corner. Phil Town converted to to extend the lead to 17-0 .

Despite looking for a try scoring bonus point Brods had to defend much of the time remaining in their own half. Excellent defence held firm and good discipline across the team earned Brods a hard earned victory away from home against a traditionally difficult side on their own field.
