Bruce's Report

In a typical derby at Broomfield two local sides gave no quarter as defences held firm despite both sides creating opportunities. Scrambling defences were the order of the day as they desperately snuffed out the attacks with their enthusiastic covering defence.

The Hipperholme boys dominated possession and territory in the early stages with Crocs looking to relieve pressure with kicks downfield . Brods played some attractive attacking rugby to set up the position from which they scored the opening try in the 12th minute .

From a 5 metre scrum Brods drive was held in the first instance however when they had a second chance Jennings picked from the base of the scrum and Crocs were unable to stop the powerful number 8 from crossing the whitewash . The conversion hit the post so the Woodhead boys had to be satisfied with a 5 -0 lead.

Brods put together some well organised forward drives which made good ground and Crocs continued to clear via the boot. Dom Georgiou drafted into the side at the last minute returned well from fullback with pace and was unlucky not to score when he linked with Cameron Wroot to gain 40 metres, Wroot’s return pass was adjudged forward as Georgiou touched down and Brods maintained their narrow lead. On 25 minutes Crocs worked their way into the Brods half and following a high tackle were awarded a penalty which was converted 5-3. Brods continued to dominate the half however Crocs midfield defence was up to it and withheld the attacks until they conceded a kickable penalty which Town converted just before half time 8-3 to Brods.

The second half started with Crossleyans taking the initiative and dominating possession through the strong running of the Hammond Brothers and Mcfarlane at fly half. With Brods back row working overtime in defence Ben Hoyle and Cam Wroot were outstanding as they withstood the home sides attacks and yet it was the No 8 Jennings who once again looked unstoppable as Brods converted their first opportunity in the home sides “ Red Zone". A deep penalty kick by Chris Georgiou didn’t make touch however a handling error resulted in Brods winning a scrum some 10 metres out. Jennings again took his chance and drove powerfully for the line scattering defenders to add to the score and with Towns conversion Brods looked to be in control at 15-3. The home side came back strongly and camped in the Brods 22 however Crocs attacks were in turn thwarted by Brods strong defence. Handling errors by the Crossleyans in attack resulted in several opportunities being lost however the pressure finally told when Jack Hammond broke the defensive line to touch down. With the conversion Crocs were still very much in the game with 15 left on the clock 15-10. Brods immediately responded with a rare visit into the Crocs 22 and were awarded a penalty in centre field which Town gratefully converted to extend the lead 18-10. The game continued to ebb and flow and Dom Georgiou was outstanding as the last line in defence as he thwarted several opportunities created by the Crossleyans. With the game moving into injury time Brods turned defence into attack through another forward rush which took them into the Crossleyans half. When the home side desperately tried to move the ball Phil Town saw his chance and intercepted. With three side steps he beat successive defenders to touch down under the posts and converted his own try to confirm a highly satisfactory performance with a 25-10 score line.

Brods Beavers entertained Roundhegians second team at Woodhead and produced another excellent high scoring performance with a 49-21 victory.
