Pete Rhodes Report

The 2's travelled to play York's 3XV with 16 players after a few late withdrawals. York scored a very early converted try by their fleet footed number 8 who side stepped his way to the line. The Brods got themselves back into the game with several phases of possession and created an overlap on the right flank which winger Ben Armitage finished in the corner. Thomson's conversion hit the post and bounced out. Both teams were making breaks but good defence stopped any scoring opportunities. However flanker Elliot Hoyle, playing out of his usual position at inside centre went through the middle at pace breaking several tackles got clear, but the York made a desperate last ditch tackle to dislodge the ball as Hoyle went over the line. York rallied and scored on the left flank after a couple of penalties needlessly given away by Brods. Right at the end of the half, good controlled phases of play brought a 3 point reward from Thomson's boot from an offside infringement by York. Half time score 14-8.

The second half got underway with Brods dominating possession, good drives from Josh Thaxter, Olly Anderson and James Heap getting the Brods over the gain line. York's defence held firm and eventually after many phases Thomson stroked over a drop goal from 30 metres out to take the score to 14-11. More pressure and good possession from an excellent line out kept Brods in the York half. Thomson kicked to the corner from a penalty and a lineout 5 metres from the York line brought more rewards as a well executed catch and drive resulted in a try for second row James Heap, Thomson converted from the touchline, 14-18. York again came back at the Brods and their scrummage superiority was evident as a series of scrum penalties eventually gained them a converted pushover try. With 5 minutes of the game left Brods got into the York half moving the ball to both flanks stretching the opposition defence. The inevitable overlap came and full back Caleb Grinsdale put skipper Thomson in at the corner and he again converted from the touchline. The Brods saw the game out with York pressing for another try in a very entertaining game. Final score 21-25 to the Brods.
