Betty Carney

Rest in peace

We’re sadden to hear that Betty Carney passed away on Monday 13th April. Betty was a valued member of the Brods Ladies Committee in the 1970’s and her pie n mushy peas had quite the reputation!

Betty and Dennis Carney knew each other since childhood as their parents were good friends. The families used to holiday together in Blackpool where Dennis tormented Betty by pulling her pigtails and stamping on her sandcastles.

When they grew up they started dating and married in Bradford in December 1956, having 3 children between 1958 and 1961. They then fostered 13 year old Jason Bull, son of Ken and Denise Bull and have treated Jason and Alison's children as their own grandchildren.
Betty used to be on the Brods ladies committee, serving after match teas on a rota. Betty had a big Le Creuset pan to make mushy peas for the players and supporters, to this day the family call it the Brods' pan.

Betty was a teacher, teaching at Lightcliffe CE school, many of the Brods may have been taught by her.

She was widowed in May 2025 after 68 years of marriage and has missed Dennis dearly. The family can only hope that they are now reunited.

Betty’s funeral will take place on at 11am, Monday 11th May at St Matthews church Lightcliffe, followed by the wake at the Brods.
