Old Brodleians Women 1XV delivered a commanding 51–12 league win away at Old Crossleyans on Sunday, overcoming a spirited home side to secure another dominant result.
Brods started with intent, striking early through Caitlin Mitchell, who crossed for the opening try following sustained pressure. Lucy Sheehan added the conversion to give Brods immediate control of the scoreboard. Building momentum, Brods added another try soon after, asserting their attacking structure and intensity at the breakdown.
Crocs responded with a score of their own and kept themselves in the contest, but Brods continued to apply pressure. By half-time, we had built a strong 24–12 lead, underpinned by sharp execution and relentless work around the contact area.
A standout feature of the first half was the dominance of hooker Jordan Goodchild, whose work to gain possession in the scrum disrupted Crossleyans’ platform and resulted in multiple stolen balls. Her impact set the tone for Brods’ forward pack authority.
As the rain intensified in the second half, Brods’ fitness and game management came to the fore. Crossleyans began to tire, and Brods capitalised ruthlessly. With quick ball secured at the ruck and impressive intensity onto the breakdown, the visitors were able to play with width and pace, running in a succession of tries to take the game beyond reach.
Elena Bunbury at scrum-half controlled the tempo superbly and was deservedly named Back of the Match, while Millie Lewis at inside centre delivered a dominant defensive performance, repeatedly shutting down opposition attacks and setting the physical standard.
Reflecting on the win, Coach Ewan Gilbert said:
“We’re really proud of the intensity we brought to the breakdown and how we managed the game, especially when the conditions turned. The work rate across the squad was outstanding, and our ability to secure quick ball allowed us to play the rugby we know we’re capable of.”
The convincing victory strengthens Brods’ position in the top half of the league table as the second half of the season builds momentum.
Old Brodleians Women return to home turf on 22nd February, when they host Preston, looking to carry this form into another big performance.
