Peter Westerby

By Bob Horne
We are saddened to report the passing of former player Peter Westerby, who died at Kirkwood Hospice after a long illness.

Funeral Details
Peter's funeral is on Friday 12th December, 11 am, at Christ the King Church, Stocksbank Road, Battyeford, Mirfield, WF14 9QT.
The family ask if we could wear something colourful, and club ties if possible.

Peter (pictured bottom left) was a 1st XV winger in the early 1970s. He had been a soccer player but decided to give rugby a go, joining several of his Lightcliffe cricketing colleagues who were playing at the club at the time.

His ball skills and speed ensured he took to the game. His most memorable day was at Wharfedale, then Upper Wharfedale, at the end of February 1971. Wharfedale had won all their games and were confident of finishing the season undefeated. Under the captaincy of Harold Smith the Brods enjoyed a famous victory, the score, from memory, something like 13-0. Peter scored two tries that afternoon (a try was still worth three points). He made a brief reappearance in the autumn of 1980 as a member of the Vets XV for their inaugural game, at home to Sheffield Tigers.

The team photo shown, featuring Peter on the front row (far left), is from the inaugural Brods Vets Tour in 1980.

We send all our best wishes to Peter’s family and friends.
