Name: John Ketteringham
Nicknames: Kett, Webmaster or JohnKett. Sometimes COTT (Chief Organiser Terrific Tours) and another historical nickname is NODDY which he had forgotten until reminded at a recent 50 year reunion with Army pals from when he joined up as an Apprentice in REME. Apparently Kett was given this nickname as he used to lollop around the parade ground! John trained as an aircraft technician (helicopter mechanic) but was so rubbish that he was actually paid to leave the Army after five years for the safety of the pilots!
Age: 67
Position: Prop/Winger
Best Rugby Moment: Debut in Brods First team in 1975 same game as Guy Standeven or maybe it was his one and only try for The Beavers which was at Yarnbury in 2008 from at least five yards out!
Worst Rugby Moment: Kett's Elche moment in 2008. He blames Phil Horton for flattening him in a ruck during the first game in Denia. Two games on tour in them days and being injured he had no reason to go steady on the Saturday night. Day 2 game in Elche and our intrepid photographer had to get off the coach and lie down to get some good sky shots. Or at least that's his story!
Favourite Drink: Ossett Ales - Yorkshire Blonde
Last meal: Gambas Pil Pil, bread & Cheese a few grapes and a bottle of Faustino 1 Rioja
Least Like To Room With On Tour: Andrew Shippin, he has a nasty habit of diving off wardrobes onto your bed!
Most Embarrassing Moment: On his one and only visit to Main Street, not many years ago with Howard Sykes & Graham Kaye all three were ejected, apparently because Howard got lairy at the bar. Kett couldn't actually see what happened from where he was half way up the lampost!
Pet hate: Rose wine
Favourite quote: Any half time team talk by Chris Wetton!
Favourite film: A Walk in The Woods with Robert Redford & Nick Nolte
Most like to be stuck in a lift with: Liam & Nathan Scott (pause for chorus)
Karaoke Song:Thanks to Jake at my gym JC Health & Fitness Elland for helping me choose my song. It's one from 1966 Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones (Not a "sisters" duet Kett??)
Worst Dressed Brod: Tough to choose between Bob Dare and John Tyson but Bob wins because he smiles more!
Since he retired from the NHS John has kept busy taking rugby photos and videos and organising the annual Beavers European Tour, the next one is to Benidorm 17-20 March 2017. He was a tour participant way back when Dennis Carney & Stuart Lawlor organised the Veterans Tour. He was keen to become involved after the 2000 Vets Tour to Prague which was the only one ever booked through a Tour Company. That day against Ricany a team full of current Czech Internationals the Vets had their biggest ever defeat and stopped counting at a hundred! So when Kett was Vets skipper to Holland in 2002 he made sure to organise the opposition himself and the Vets won both games against Utrecht and Oldfants. He remained involved as main tour organiser when the Vets Tours ended after 30 years in 2010 and became the Beavers Tour the following season. If you are interested in knowing more copies of his autobiography called either 'Kett a Life' title by Gaz Taylor or Brucey's suggestion 'It's all about YOU' will be available on Amazon shortly!
John was born in Hull within a stone's throw of The Boulevard and grew up watching the likes of Clive Sullivan, Johnny Whiteley and the Drake twins from the threepenny stand. After leaving the Army he trained as a psychiatric nurse and played rugby league for a season in Hull before he realised his skills were more suited to Union. Before joining Brods he played for Hull & East Riding, making his first team debut away at Nuneaton in 1972. He moved around with work, playing at Woodhead for one season in 1975 then at West Park Bramhope and Solihull before returning to his spiritual home Brods in 1981 and playing 2nds/3rds/Vets and Beavers continually until a hip replacement in 2012 forced his premature retirement.
Kett can be found most Saturdays watching and taking pictures (providing he remembers to take the lens cap off) of one of our senior teams, or in his speedos in Benalmadena.
As long as he can remember the total number of tourists (42 or 43 was it Kett?), you give him water when he needs it, and your happy being snapped at every opportunity, he is a fantastic bloke to have around our club, if you see him this weekend get him a beer and remember - it's a beautiful day in brighouse!
Next week we meet....Oliver Ackroyd!
