RFU Postpone the start of the season

RFU Postpone the start of the season

James Ogden

What that means for us

With the RFU postponing the start of the new season by two weeks, here's when our teams will begin competitive rugby.

  • Our Men's 1st XV will open the season against Pocklington away on Saturday 26th September
  • Our Women's XV will open the season against Pocklington at home on Sunday 27th September
  • Our Men's 2nd XV will open the season against Castleford 1st XV on Saturday 26th September
  • Our Men's 3rd XV (The Beavers!) will open the season against Skipton 2nd XV at home on Saturday 26th September.
  • Our junior teams will commence fixtures from Sunday 27th September

Pre-season friendlies
Friendlies are still permitted, subject to the relevant risk assessments. The men's 1st XV friendly against West Hartlepool (at home) will now take place on Saturday 12th September - so it's a good hit out that's closer to the start of the delayed season.

Age Grade Rugby (Minis and Juniors)
Yorkshire Age Grade has issued guidance stating that no contact games or contact in training until the 26th September.

The Rugby Football Union's decision explained
The RFU has delayed the start of the community rugby season because of concerns about player welfare and pitch conditions affecting much of England.

According to officials, 71.3% of England is now in drought while the country has recorded its driest July since records began in 1836.

In recent weeks, the RFU has reminded its members of existing guidance on managing rugby pitches in drought conditions and carrying out risk assessments to see if pitches are safe to use and to mitigate the risks of injury.

Many grounds are now deemed unsuitable for safe full-contact activity and no lengthy spells of rain are currently forecast before the scheduled start of the English community season on Saturday, 5 September.

After gathering feedback from representatives across different regions and discussing the options, the RFU has pushed the start back to the week commencing Monday, 21 September.

"We know this decision will be disappointing for the clubs, schools and colleges, players, volunteers and fans looking forward to the start of the season, and we do not underestimate the impact it will have across the game," said RFU president Sir Bill Beaumont.

"While we recognise that not everyone will agree with this decision, making it now provides greater certainty for clubs, schools and colleges as they prepare for the months ahead.

"Player welfare and readiness have been central to our thinking throughout, alongside our desire to give the season the best possible opportunity to begin on a fair and consistent footing across the country."
