We’re extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Dennis Carney. He was 92.
Dennis undoubtedly had a huge influence on our club. Always described as a “larger than life” character, Dennis began playing for the Brods in the 1960’s and clearly won the respect and admiration of all his teammates.
He played for many seasons but arguably his greatest Brods legacy would be the creation of the Brods Vets. Dennis was the main driver responsible for setting up our first ever Veterans rugby side in the late 1970’s. This legacy continues now, with our Beavers’ XV who carry the same ethos Dennis set in motion.
A staple of the Vets season was the annual Tour, another key area Dennis took the lead on, particularly through the 80s and 90s.
In 2010 Dennis received the TL Asquith Trophy for “services to the club”. A great player, a true gentleman and an outstanding Brodleian.
We’ll be sure to pass on any funeral details, here on the website, when we have them.
All our thoughts at firmly with Dennis’s family and friends at this time. Our clubhouse flag flies at half-mast in tribute to the great man.
