Brods took a large following to Goole for Saturday’s game and produced a comfortable victory which secured 4 more vital league points. The players & supporters might have been a little frustrated that a try bonus point was not secured as the Hipperholme side dominated the match from start to finish. Several scoring opportunities were missed however an away win against a club seventh in the table was more than acceptable and the Woodhead boys can look forward to their next challenge away at Dinnington on Saturday without any further injuries.
In murky conditions the floodlights were on from the kick off and Brods took the game to their hosts from the kick off. Early pressure saw some strong running from Phil Town and Ryan Harris taking the game deep into Goole territory and Brods monopolised possession within the Goole 22. The early pressure earned its reward when Joe Kafatolu broke the defensive line following some strong Brods forward play. He touched down with several defenders hanging onto him and Georgiou converted to give Brods a well earned early lead.
Following Brods early domination Goole came back well and earned a penalty following a period of possession in the Brods half however the goal attempt was missed. In a highly competitive period a skirmish off the ball resulted in Dom Georgiou receiving a yellow card for foul play and the Goole scrum half a red for striking.
Brods forward domination was clear and they proceeded to rumble upfield using their strong mauling technique to their advantage. Having gained further territory near the Goole line a well controlled lineout was formed and Bob Sykes excellent work was rewarded when he touched down following the inevitable drive. Georgiou again converted, this time from the touchline to give Brods a 14-0 lead at half time.
Brods continued to dominate the game in the second half however the Goole defence was stubborn and the home side played with great spirit without being able to break down Brods own defensive line.
The Hipperholme boys dominant scrum drove the home side back on several occasions and from a good position Christian Georgious angled kick to the corner was chased down by Matty Hoyle however the ball could not be regathered and Goole settled for a scrum 5 metres from their line Brods continued to press and after 20 minutes of the half they got their reward with a fine move resulted in Cam Wroot making good ground down the right before releasing Jasper Ayrton against a stretched defence. The young winger touched down in fine style however the conversion was missed and the score stood at 19-0. A further product of the Brods youth system entered the fray in the shape of Elliot Craven who has just returned to the club after his time at University and travelling in Australia. Elliot immediately made his presence felt with some big tackles together with some deft handling and looks like he will be another great addition to the first team squad.
As full time approached Goole threw everything at the Brods defence, two yellow cards for Alex Dawson and Ryan Harris didn’t help as the home side looked for some reward for all their hard work. Eventually Goole produced a well worked try with a kick to the corner behind a stretched and limited defence. The try was a well earned however Brods were still in search of a fourth try to earn a bonus point and Jason Dodd was held on the Goole line in the final effort before the referee blew for full time.
