After many years of trying Old Brods U17’s finally managed to gain their first ever victory against Hull Ionians, winning 15-0 at home in a crucial Yorkshire league 1 match.
Ionians travelled to Woodhead without a recognised hooker and as a result the game had to be played with uncontested scrums which probably favoured the home. Nevertheless in a pretty uneventful first half, where both teams made numerous mistakes and handling errors ,the only highlight came when Charlie Wood knocked the ball back from under a high defensive kick and set up a move which eventually saw the ball switching quickly across to the left side of the field from where centre Amir Nasir launched a spirited run down the wing ,simply to be tackled yards short of the line . The only points of the half however came from the boot of fly half Jack DD Martin with a well struck penalty from under the posts.
Both teams lacked any real penetration until the introduction of last seasons top scorer Chris Vine who broke the deadlock after 20 mins of the second half coasting past three players to score from 22 metres out for an unconverted try and a 8-0 lead.
Ionians never really looked like scoring and with Brods pushing forward the ball was rooked back from 10 metres out to scrum half and man of the match Jack Martin who dated in for the try comfortable converted by his namesake Jack DD Martin and unassailable 15-0 lead.
The icing on the cake should have come when hooker Perry Wilson broke from the halfway line but unfortunately he did not have sufficient support and was tackled within a whisper of the line.
