After a long layoff Old Brods U17’s returned to action with a tough home league game against Doncaster but unfortunately lost 15-3.
Brods simply could not compete against the heavier Doncaster pack .They were thoroughly muscled out of the scrums and just could not win sufficient ball in the line out or build up the phases to feed their more effective backline.
Playing up the hill in the first half Brods managed to contain Doncaster and were unlucky not to take a very early lead when scrum half Jack Martin broke from his own 22 metres and was brought down within inches of the line. Half way through the second half flanker Richard Stokes broke quickly off the back of the scrum intercepted a pass from Doncaster’s scrum half and was unfortunate to be judged offside with an open field in front of him.
In the second half the slope was always going to give the advantage to the away team’s heavier pack and within the minutes of the restart Doncaster barged their way over in the left corner for an unconverted try .Brods never gave up with the full back Louie Butler picking up and clearing any loose ball at the back .
Brods did get back into the match with a penalty kick from Jack DD Martin which took the score to 5-3 before some inept tackling on the left wing allowed Doncaster to score another unconverted try out wide for a 10-3 lead.
On the few occasions Brods backs did get the ball they showed just how dangerous they could be Zac Ward, made a number of good breaks from flanker and both Ollie Lee and Chris Vine showed a burst of speed which almost took them over the line. However it was not to be and within the last minute of the game Doncaster sealed the victory with another push over try from their forwards.
