Good conditions give Brods 17's the advantage

Old Brods U17's ran in 5 tries to beat York 30-5 as they looked to secure a top 3 spot in the first division of the Yorkshire U17 league. Many of the teams in the league rely on their heavier forwards to dominate the game but York like Brods prefer to play a more open game which in this instance favoured the home team.

Brods made a number of tactical changes to their team selection a head of the game moving the pacey Chris Vine on to the wing and adding more power to the centres with the introduction of Ollie Lee and Aamir Nasir to the No12 and 13 positions. They also made the tactical decision of taking short line outs and switching their speedier forwards into the backs, a tactic that worked fine for them and resulted in the first try of the game . Brods winning the line out on the right hand side of the field and switching the ball quickly across to the left where second row forward James Brambles was ready to pounce for the score and a 5-0 lead.

Brods second score again, came from a set piece .This time the ball was won in the scrum and quickly passed onto the left wing for Vine, who justified his selection at this position, crossing over in the corner from 30 metres out but touching down under the posts to help fly half Jack DD Martin add the extras with the conversion and an early 12-0 lead to the home side.

Brods continued to dominate, Perry Wilson extending the lead with a drop over try after the forwards had taken the ball up to the line and then Vine scoring his second of the day to extend the lead to 22 points. Vine’s try coming after fullback Louie Butler had pinned back York deep inside their own half with a fine kick out of hand only for York to fumble the ball when they had taken a quick throw which the ever alert Vine collected and ran in for the try.

The second half was a much tighter affair .To their credit York never gave up and were rewarded with a soft unconverted try of their own giving them 5 points and preventing the white wash .After that score York never threatened the Brods line again. Jack DD Martin extended the lead with a penalty and soon after Perry Wilson charged down a kick ,collected the ball and raced up field before dummying the opposition and flipping out a fine pass for winger Charlie Wood who touched down in the corner.

Man of the match Richard Stokes playing at Flanker and Second Row.
