Old Brods U17’s run in this years Yorkshire cup came to the end when they lost in the quarter finals by 17 points to 12 away at Wheatley Hills.
With the side having to play the game without a recognised hooker and with 4 players missing on county duty the team produced a spirited display but simply could not win sufficient ball from the scrums and line outs to feed their reshuffled backs line .
The home team had most of the territory and possession but it was Brods who scored first after winning the ball in the scrum in the Wheatley Hills 22 .The ball was shipped sloppily across the backs with at least 2 wayward passes thrown before fly half Jack DD Martin picked up the loose ball and darted through a gaping hole in the Hills defence to score a try converted by acting fullback Chris Vine.
Five minutes later and man of the match scrum half Jack Martin broke down the left wing before being tackled within metres of the line however No8 Greig Robertson followed up and took the ball over for the score and a 12-0 half team lead for the visitors.
Brods had the momentum going into the interval but at the start of the second half they had to reshuffle the team once again following a shoulder injury to Liam Johnson and it was Wheatley who came out with all guns blazing .Their forwards very quickly scored 2 push over tries and brought themselves well and truly back into the game at 10-12 .Brods were now on the back foot but they did have the chance to score again when a Chris Vine penalty kick fell just short of the post .The Wheatley defence then took the ball over the line resulting in a play which nearly resulted in a third try for the Brods .
Unfortunately this was Brods last real chance ,Wheatley had more numbers on their bench and eventually their dominance in the forwards led to a third and decisive try under the posts .
