Old Brodleians 24 v Wath 24

The headline obviously refers to Charlie and Lawrence Seaman who both had great games today and Dad Seaman who then stayed afterwards to referee a girls u18 game!

After 3 recent defeats to higher quality opposition it was great to get a competitive fixture today with players of the same age group. And what a great game of rugby it turned out to be, played in fine spirit and very well refereed.

We last played Wath in early April at the end of last season and lost that game 32-17 after turning around at half time only 5 points behind with the slope at our backs to come. That day we lost our competitive edge, didn’t compete well enough at the break downs and so played for long periods without the ball. Today we competed well throughout the whole team but particularly in the forwards, having a good portion of possession which led to 4 tries by 4 different backs. Wath went ahead after 10 mins with a series of burly forward drives. We did have possession and were able to build some good phases of play in attacking areas with Harry going close breaking off from a 5 metre line out catch and drive. Wath scored another 2 tries from close range before we broke up the right side, Daryl putting Ed away on a powerful 30 metre outside break. Having crossed the line he closed in on the posts but took a knock grounding the ball, meaning he watched the conversion miss through the eyes of Tweetie Pie! Half time 5-19.

Second half we drove hard at our opponents, Midge, Tom, Will, Rohaan, Swiff, Charlie S all carrying the load. It was great to see new player James also eager in attack and defence, but today was a day when Dan’s mojo returned. After having 3 quiet games Dan, playing out of position in the back row, came alive with several powerful penetrating runs and was a nuisance in defence too. Our second try didn’t take long, an attacking line out and Ben’s flat pass finding Underpants hitting a perfect line at pace taking him through to the line.

Wath did get a break away try, looked like a centre breaking mid field and a good pass to finish. However not long after Daryl fielded a long 22 drop out, put on a speedy outside burst to go in at the corner and making a sticks to enable Joe to hit the conversion. With less than 10 mins to go, we moved the ball left, good handing and running from Ben, Charlie G and Underpants put Loz on an outside arc and make the corner and level it. With the conversion missed we were level and went looking menacingly for the win but ran out of time.

Well done everyone today, a really good performance, played with 14 players second half after Eds injury, but it looked as if the pride and enthusiasm had returned today which is great to see. A great game in which everyone handled, tackled and played a part. I could tell afterwards non of you left anything on the park.
