Another fantastic comeback at Woodhead

Old Brods Junior Colts’ emphatic win over Hull Ionians this weekend was a real treat for the crowd, many of whom had witnessed a similar gritty performance by the first team the day before.
After an enthusiastic start Brod’s seemed to be playing most of the rugby but some lack lustre defence from Brod’s allowed Hull to score two tries early in the first half. This gave the visitors some confidence and they started to take control of the game. A good break by Brod’s winger Adam Parkinson was pulled up by the referee who judged that he’d put a foot in touch. Brod’s fought hard and some determined play by Josh Pickles and the rest of the front row brought some mistakes from Hull who eventually conceded a penalty within full back Nick Rawsthorn’s range. The first half finished at 3-10 with Hull looking like the much better side.
Hull started the second half with the same confidence and quickly got themselves on the score sheet with another converted try to extend their lead to 3-17. It looked like Hull were going to run away with the game at this point as the newly formed Junior Colts were struggling to stick to a game-plan. However this young side showed some true Brodliean grit and took hold of the game in the last 20 minutes. A strong run from Nick Rawsthorn allowed Brodie Wilson to crash over the line to score and lift the Brod’s spirits. From there Brod’s were looking like a unit once more and after some determined play by the forwards Max Sheldrake broke free to score under the posts, he converted his own try to level the scores at 17-17. Unfortunately the game was interrupted at this point as Nick Rawsthorn suffered a nasty break to his wrist. With the scores level the Brods players clicked as a unit and the team stormed their way up the field and repeated drives into the Hull defence were eventually rewarded by a penalty which Max Sheldrake made no mistake in converting, guiding the ball through the posts to give the young Brods the lead for the first time in the game. With just 4 minutes left some tense play followed with Hull looking like they might make a comeback but the Brods defence was up to the job and closed out the game 20-17.
